Basketball Introduction
Basketball is a team sport with two teams of 5 players on the playing field at one time. The playing area is known as the "court." Teams try to score points by shooting a basketball through the top of a metal circle known as the hoop. The game is played in 4 quarters of equal length or 2 halves (the length of these periods varies by age). This sport is one of the most popular in the world. There are many different rules and techniques specific to basketball. There are also specific positions on each team. Teams have a point guard, who is fast and has good ball handling skills. They also have players known as shooting guards; these players have wonderful shooting skills. The small forward or power forward are players who can handle the ball and play close to the hoop. The biggest players are the centers, who play close to the hoop. During our PE class we will learn some of the basics of basketball and then work to piece together what we have learned into game situations. Students are expected to participate every day and be prepared to learn the rules and techniques of basketball. Finally, students will have FUN!
